Understanding Atomic Deformation with Digital Moiré (study guide)

Atoms form repeating patterns. When a material deforms, those patterns change—and digital moiré analysis helps us read those changes.

By measuring shifts in the pattern’s phase, we can reconstruct displacement and strain, connecting atomic arrangements to continuum mechanics: a way of describing deformation as a field across a material, rather than tracking every atom separately.

Our new illustrated introduction begins with motifs and transformations, explains the key equations in plain English, and introduces the Holomoire SiC Sim Library, a developing workbench for exploring this connection.
